In juni stuurde de American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) een sponsorbrief aan al haar stakeholders. In deze brief werden valse beschuldigingen geuit aan het adres van Creative Commons, CC zou volgens ASCAP tot doel hebben het auteursrecht te ondermijnen. CC International reageerde op deze beschuldigingen op de CC website:
Creative Commons licenses are copyright licenses – plain and simple. Period. CC licenses are legal tools that creators can use to offer certain usage rights to the public, while reserving other rights. Without copyright, these tools don’t work. Artists and record labels that want to make their music available to the public for certain uses, like noncommercial sharing or remixing, should consider using CC licenses. Artists and labels that want to reserve all of their copyright rights should absolutely not use CC licenses.
De CC Mixter community reageerde op deze open brief met het volgende statement en met het opzetten van een remix event: Freedom To Share. Want nog krachtiger dan woorden zijn volgens CC Mixter de creatieve werken die ontstaan door samenwerking en het delen van content.
As artists, we believe WE should have the freedom to choose how we share our work. Creative Commons licenses are an innovative way for us to retain ownership, and yet also give us the freedom to choose how our work is used and reused. We do not sacrifice ownership by sharing our creations under these licenses, nor do we necessarily give up our right to receive royalties (depending on the Creative Commons license under which a work is shared).
Freedom To Share bestaat uit twee gedeeltes. Het eerste gedeelte van het evenement vindt plaats van 1 tm 14 augustus, artiesten kunnen dan hun muzikale werk uploaden naar CC Mixter. Het thema Freedom To Share moet centraal staan in het werk, denk hierbij onderwerpen zoals artistieke vrijheid, delen van werken, samenwerking en ontwikkelingen in de muziekindustrie. Na 14 augustus mogen deze inzendingen samen met andere muziekfragmenten (mits ze de juiste CC licentie hebben) geremixed worden tot nieuwe werken.
